Somebody saved a newspaper page. Look at it now.

Aurora Drive-In, 13500 Aurora Ave, 362-4747. Right in the neighborhood. You could practically walk there from Ingraham, and half of us did — or piled four in the front and three more in the trunk when the ticket booth got picky. Swingin' Stewardesses. Swingin' Pussycats. Class of '74. "No One Under 18." That never stopped anybody. Speaker on the window, fog on the windshield, the projector beam cutting through the mist off Bitter Lake.

The Crest was the cheap date. Second-run, dollar-something a head, whatever had already made its money downtown showing up a few months late on 165th. Two people, popcorn, and change back from a five. Every kid at Ingraham knew the Crest was where you took someone when you liked them enough to go out but not enough to spring for the Coliseum or the UA 150 downtown.

And look at what else was playing that week. Deliverance at the Ridgemont on Greenwood. Jeremiah Johnson held over at the Valley Drive-In. Fantasia — fourth week — up the road at the Varsity. The Day of the Jackal at Renton Village. Frenzy and Sleuth at the UA 70. Trader Horn and Night of the Lepus everywhere you looked, because if a drive-in was open in Seattle in the summer of '72, it was showing Night of the Lepus.

The Rancho. The Duwamish. The Kenmore. The Cinemond out in Redmond back when Redmond was still trees. Names most of our kids have never heard.

We had a movie house for every mood and every budget. Aurora when you wanted the car. The Crest when you wanted her hand. The Varsity when you actually cared what was on the screen. The Coliseum when it was somebody's birthday.

Fifty-five years later, the drive-in speakers are gone. The Crest hung on longer than anyone had a right to expect and then it went too. But the people who sat next to you in those cars and those seats — most of them are still here.

Well. That poster hits different today.

Dolly Parton and Tim Curry — the two faces on our Comeback Tour 2026 poster — both left us this week. Same 24 hours. Both 80.

We picked them because they were the soundtrack and the swagger of who we were at Ingraham. Big hair, bigger nerve, the kind of stage presence that told you you could be anybody you wanted to be.

None of us know which song is the last one. Dolly didn't. Tim didn't. That's the whole reason to show up while the band's still playing.

So the Comeback Tour goes on. Same date, same Ballard Elks, same classmates — and one more reason to be in the room.

Come on. You know you thought about her. Maybe him. Maybe the whole gang out at the Goat Farm. Maybe the one you passed a note to in third period and never quite worked up the nerve to say hi to at the lockers.

Jeannie blinked. Samantha twitched. And somewhere between 1971 and 1972, we were all trying to look cool leaning against a locker at Ingraham.

Fifty-four/fifty-five years later — we get one more night. One night. One room. One more chance.
